Making your own holiday banner for Thanksgiving could not be easier when you are drawing the letters by hand. No special equipment necessary!
Mantle banners are one of my favorite things to make every time a holiday rolls around. They immediately draw focus in a room and make simple decor on top of the mantle stand out.
Here’s how to do it:
SUPPLIES:
5 Sheets of Card Stock (I used white)
Pencil
Marker (I used gold)
Scissors
Ruler
String
10 Mini Clothes Pins
Tape
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Draw two 4″x”6″ rectangles on one sheet of card stock.
2. Stack the remaining card stock underneath the one you just drew on, and cut out the rectangles.
3. Using a ruler or straight edge, draw a “V” at the top of one of the rectangles.
4. Stack the remaining rectangles underneath the one you just drew on, and cut out the “V” shape.
5. Start lettering! Use a marker to hand draw each letter onto each rectangle.
6. If you are hanging this banner on your mantle, secure string to each end of the mantle with tape (I used stocking holders).
7. Secure each letter onto the string with a mini clothes pin.

HAND LETTERING TIPS:
When writing a letter, there are upward strokes and downward strokes.
For example, when I write the lowercase letter “a,” my hand makes a downward stroke initially and then comes up before going down again to finish the letter.
In hand lettering, the downward strokes are thickest and the upward strokes are thinnest. Make all downward strokes as bold and thick as you’d like them to be by coloring them in with your marker.
In the video, you can see this concept in action.
